Case Studies

Live Tank Repair on Liquid Natural Gas Tanks

  • In the early 1990's MCL (Offshore) Ltd was awarded a £1.3 million contract by Bechtel Limited for the repair and refurbishment of live liquid natural gas tanks on the Sonatrach site in Arzew, Algeria.

  • In 1996 MCL were called upon by Bechtel to advise on the repair of large liquid gas storage tanks in Arjew, Algeria.
  • The problems which had to be overcome were mainly that the tanks could not be taken out of commission and had to be worked on live.
  • MCL designed a new method of repair such that all of the repairs including that of replating and repair of in excess of 3,000 leaks, followed by blasting and painting.
  • All of the work was completed on time, without incident, and totally without interruption to the clients production or storage.
  • This type of repair had not been previously undertaken on live tanks.
  • The work was managed on behalf of the client by Bechtel International for Sonatrach Algeria.
  • Contract Value £6.3 million (sterling)

Blasting of side wall of above tanks

  • Following the success of the previous contract MCL were awarded a contract for the side wall blasting of the LNG tanks. Limitations were placed on the contract such that "open" blasting was not permitted.
  • MCL introduced a new sealed vacuum blasting system and success fully completed the project for Kellogg Brown & Roote on the Sonatrach site, once again without incident.
